This case study delves into the process of constructing a garden office in the charming town of Windsor for a family in their 60’s with two teenagers. The clients’ primary goal was to create a dedicated space for daytime work, while also cherishing the opportunity to transform it into an inviting venue for relaxation and socializing after hours.
This summary will explore the various aspects involved in designing and building a versatile garden office that seamlessly integrates into its beautiful surroundings, all while satisfying the clients’ requirements for productivity and enjoyment.
Due to the specific measurements of the garden office project, additional planning permission was not necessary. With the internal floor area falling below 30m2 and the building height remaining under 2.5m, neither a planning application nor a building control application was required. This allowed the construction process to proceed smoothly, minimizing bureaucratic hurdles and ensuring timely completion of the project. By adhering to the permissible parameters, the clients could enjoy their garden office without the need for extensive paperwork or regulatory procedures.
To prepare the site for the construction of the garden office, several steps were taken. Initially, the removal of three trees was necessary to make room for the desired structure. Once the tree removal was complete, the ground was then meticulously prepared by leveling it up to ensure a stable and even surface. To establish a solid foundation, a concrete base was poured, providing the necessary support for the garden office. This careful preparation of the site ensured a stable and durable foundation for the subsequent construction phases.
In addition to the construction of the garden office, the clients expressed their desire for additional features during the midway point of the project. One of their requests was for air conditioning, which we promptly organised, installed, and provided a certificate for the installation to ensure compliance with safety standards.
Moreover, to enhance the functionality and entertainment options within the office, a TV was mounted on the wall. Implementing this feature not only catered to their work needs but also allowed for moments of relaxation and leisure.
Externally, the clients opted to include an extra shed that would be attached to the main building. This shed was equipped with a hydraulic shutter door to simplify access and storage. Our team successfully managed the incorporation of this additional structure, meticulously ensuring seamless integration with the existing garden office, resulting in a brilliant final outcome.
During the construction process, the clients proved to be incredibly accommodating and flexible, which greatly facilitated the project’s timely completion.
However, several challenges did arise. Firstly, the demolition of four sheds and subsequent disposal required frequent skip swaps. Due to limited space on the site, the skips had to be relocated almost daily.
This logistical constraint demanded careful coordination to ensure efficient waste management and optimize the available workspace. Despite these challenges, effective planning and proactive problem-solving ultimately allowed for the project to progress smoothly within the given timeframe.
